l should be reading my 30 pages of intro for this women's history course but I just had a bagel so mediocre I can't stop thinking about it, and I felt I needed to air out my thoughts about my late lunch. I first will present my credentials, half jewish and from Brooklyn. Everyone I have hosted in NYC has been forced to go to La Bagel Delight, the best bagel spot in my personal opinion. I really don't think there is any one "perfect bagel" or one perfect store, because bagels are inharently delicious (WHEN DONE RIGHT) and even a mediocre one is a meal I will completely finish, as I did the one I am about to put on trial.
To understand why I got a 4pm bagel, something I am not sure i entirely have to defend, is because I had classes from 11 until 3:20. Sadly prime lunch hours. In my final class I could feel that I was hungry enough to produce an uncomfortable noise in a quiet classroom, should my energentic magic professor (yes I'm in a class about magic) decide to finally take a breath. I also recently discovered lox spread, which is my prefferred ratio of lox to cheese. All things were pointing to buy something to eat and have it be a bagel.
The bagel place is also across the street from the building I had class in. It replaced another bagel place and before that, a Starbucks that also was a sauna. It seems like the heating problem the Starbucks faced was fixed by these interchangable college bagel place chains. Inside it was typical, I won't get too into it. There were tables and even chairs. They had a shelf of different hats and tote bags which I thought was kind of ambitious and a little pompus, a place not even open for a year trying to sell me swag.
There were a few people there, when I got on line there was two friends in front of me and some people seated. A woman entered soon after me and she new the woman before me. I was sandwhiched between them as they talked around me. The line did not move, somehow the customer in the front needed to show the cashier something on her phone?
When it was my turn to order I noticed that there was none of my beloved lox spread. They had bacon chive and vegan and all sorts of too fancy for my present taste. All well and good but I knew what I wanted, what should be a staple at any bagel place.... so dissapointed. Other Syracuse places had lox spread! Though they did call it salmon spread.... this should've been a sign that I was too far from the epicenter for good bagels. I will say I did get a rosemary and salt bagel which is something I have come to embrace and think works well for the bagel medium.
I worked up the courage to ask if they had lox spread and they said they could do cream cheese and lox. Okay, fine, whatever. I went to pay and this bagel was FOURTEEN DOLLARS and NINE cents. How is a bagel in Syracuse from a chain worth more than an established bagel place on the edge of millionaire Brooklyn. I did not get a drink and I did not get a sweet treat. Just a bagel. Bruegger's is twelve fourty for unsweetened ice tea and a bagel sandwhich, like with extra stuff on it. La Bagel Delight is around ten for a bagel and a drink. I'm just saying!
Anyways after a harrowing journey home (though I did run into some friends), I sit down to eat this bagel and it is open. it is two bagel halves, both with cream cheese (at least it was a harty amount) and the lox had partially fallen off one of the sides (from the harrowing journey). I understand why it came in a box now.
Presentation asaide, the bagel was pretty good, not too salty which worked well since I was also dealing with full lox. The cream cheese might've been a bit too sweet but there was enough lox that the cheese was really there for texture sake. It did the job, it was a bagel. I blame this on a bagel place not run by a good nyc jew who understands the process enough to create something up to my standards and not just coming slightly above average.
So this is my 3.5 star review of the bagel place near campus. I cannot believe I wrote all of this for a bagel I ate in five min. I think its my ancestors are just appaled that I spent that much money on a bagel and need to let it out somewhere. Enough that I also draw a picture to go with this piece on my trackpad. I think I am finally focused enough to do a little scholarly reading now. I guess...
Bye...... ππ
